Alcoholic Cocktail Rocks or Old-Fashioned Glass 3 ingredients

Recipe

  • 2 oz Absinthe
  • 1 tbsp granulated Sugar
  • 1/2 tspliquid wormwood Extract

Instructions

This is as close to the original Absinthe as you can get. Absente is very similar, but substitutes "Southern Wormwood" - which is thujone free - so it can be sold legally anywhere. Wormwood Extract is safe in moderation, and is also legal. Mixing with ice and Sugar produces a proper "louche", as per the original preparation method, which entailed pouring iced Water over Sugar cubes set on a slotted spoon balanced over ones glass of Absinthe - the shaker method works better, and is less complex.Pour the Absente Liqueur (legal to import), granulated Sugar, and 20 drops (approx 1/2 tsp) liquid wormwood Extract (available from many health food stores - Herb Pharm is a good choice) into a shaker with ice. Shake well, strain into an old-fashioned glass, and serve.

About Absinthe Olde-style

The Absinthe Olde-style cocktail is a potent and intriguing drink that showcases the distinct and historically rich spirit of absinthe. This cocktail blends 2 ounces of absinthe with a tablespoon of granulated sugar and a half teaspoon of liquid wormwood extract, resulting in a bittersweet and herbaceous profile. Absinthe, often referred to as "the green fairy," is known for its strong anise flavor and its unique ability to evoke the mystique of 19th-century bohemian culture. The addition of wormwood extract intensifies the drink's botanical complexity, paying homage to absinthe's original formulation. The sugar not only balances the bitterness but also enhances the aromatic qualities of the drink, making each sip a sensory experience.

The history of absinthe is steeped in legend and controversy. Originating in Switzerland in the late 18th century, it became immensely popular in France during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly among artists and writers like Vincent van Gogh and Ernest Hemingway. Its high alcohol content and rumored hallucinogenic properties led to widespread bans across Europe and the United States by the early 20th century. However, in recent years, absinthe has experienced a revival, with modern distillers adhering to traditional recipes while adhering to current safety standards. The Absinthe Olde-style cocktail is a nod to this storied past, capturing the essence of a bygone era in a glass.

This cocktail is alcoholic, so drink responsibly! Best served in a Rocks or Old-Fashioned Glass, though any glass works!

Feel free to get creative with substitutions — try different fruit types, sugar substitutes, or liquor brands. Crafting cocktails should be fun!
