About Chuhai

Chuhai, short for "shochu highball," is a refreshing Japanese cocktail that combines shochu, a traditional Japanese distilled spirit, with soda water and a splash of lemon juice. This drink is characterized by its light and crisp flavor, making it a perfect choice for those who enjoy a bubbly and zesty beverage. The use of shochu gives the Chuhai a smooth and versatile base, allowing the citrusy brightness of the lemon juice to shine through, while the soda water provides a delightful effervescence.

The origins of Chuhai trace back to post-World War II Japan, when it emerged as a popular, casual drink in izakayas (Japanese pubs). Over the years, it has become a staple in Japanese drinking culture, often available in various fruit flavors and canned versions in convenience stores across the country. As a testament to its popularity and adaptability, Chuhai continues to evolve, but its simple, invigorating essence remains a beloved choice for those seeking a taste of Japan's vibrant drinking scene.

This cocktail is alcoholic, so drink responsibly! Best served in a Rocks or Old-Fashioned Glass, though any glass works!

Feel free to get creative with substitutions — try different fruit types, sugar substitutes, or liquor brands. Crafting cocktails should be fun!
