Share one in a review! The Crusta is a classic cocktail that dates back to the mid-19th century, and it is considered a precursor to the modern cocktail. It was created by Joseph Santini, an Italian bartender in New Orleans, and first appeared in print in Jerry Thomas's 1862 "The Bartender's Guide." The Crusta was innovative for its time, particularly due to its presentation, which includes a sugared rim and a long, spiraled lemon peel inside the glass.
The drink itself is a harmonious blend of 2 oz of brandy, 1/2 oz of fresh lemon juice, 1 teaspoon each of maraschino liqueur and curacao orange liqueur, and two dashes of bitters. This combination creates a balanced profile that is both citrusy and slightly sweet, with a hint of bitterness. The Crusta is known for its refreshing and sophisticated taste, making it a timeless choice for cocktail enthusiasts. Its elegant presentation and complex flavors make it a delightful drink for special occasions or simply to enjoy a taste of cocktail history.
This cocktail is alcoholic, so drink responsibly! Best served in a Rocks or Old-Fashioned Glass, though any glass works!
Feel free to get creative with substitutions — try different fruit types, sugar substitutes, or liquor brands. Crafting cocktails should be fun!
