Instructions

In a double-rocks glass, muddle the mint leaves in the simple syrup. Add the bourbon, the fill the glass with shaved or crushed ice. Stir until the glass is frosted on the outside. Top with more crushed ice to form an ice dome. Garnish with a mint sprig and a few drops of bitters (optional).

About Mint Julep

The Mint Julep is a refreshing cocktail that perfectly embodies the spirit of Southern hospitality. With a base of bourbon whiskey, this drink is sweetened with simple syrup and infused with fresh mint, creating a harmonious blend of flavors. The mint introduces a cool, aromatic freshness, while the bourbon adds a warm, rich depth. The simple syrup balances these elements with a touch of sweetness, and when served over crushed ice, the Mint Julep becomes a cooling, invigorating escape perfect for hot summer days.

Historically, the Mint Julep has roots in the American South, particularly in Kentucky, where it has been associated with the Kentucky Derby since the 1930s. However, its origins date back further, with mentions as early as the 18th century. Traditionally served in a silver or pewter cup, the Mint Julep was initially considered a morning drink, believed to have medicinal benefits. Over time, it evolved from a regional favorite to a symbol of Southern elegance and leisure, cherished for its simple yet sophisticated profile.

This cocktail is alcoholic, so drink responsibly! Best served in a Highball Glass, though any glass works!
