Old Fashioned
Alcoholic Cocktail Rocks or Old-Fashioned Glass 5 ingredients

Recipe

  • 2 oz Bourbon Whiskey
  • 2 dashes Bitters (Angostura &/or Orange)
  • 1 tsp Sugar (or 1 tablespoon Simple Syrup)
  • 1 Maraschino Cherry (optional)
  • 1 Orange Peel (optional)

Instructions

Mix sugar (or simple syrup) and bitters in an old-fashioned glass. Optionally, drop in a cherry and an orange wedge. Muddle into a paste using a muddler or the back end of a spoon. Pour in bourbon, and carefully add a large ice cube. Stir until well-chilled. Express an orange peel over the drink, rub the peel along the edge of the glass, then drop the peel in the drink. Garnish with a cherry.

Higher quality bourbon is important here, as it's the main flavor in the drink, a rye is often preferred. Some prefer using simple syrup, but the choice is ultimately yours. While the garnish is optional, it is HIGHLY recommended to include them because it does add to the flavor profile of the drink.

What a classic! This is my favorite cocktail. I’ve started using Demerara instead of simple syrup and it gives it a richer flavor

I'm honestly not sure how you could go wrong with this one. Not only is it a classic, but it's one of the easiest cocktails to make (but also extremely easy to make wrong). An Old Fashioned is the go-to cocktail for my wife and I at pretty much any cocktail bar where we can't decide what we want. Use a quality rye bourbon and you're already good to go. I also recommend using Demerara Syrup instead of normal simple syrup. Enjoy!
