Recipe

  • 1 oz Rum (Spiced)
  • 1 oz Rum (Black)
  • 1/2 oz Orgeat Syrup
  • 1/2 oz Orange Curacao
  • 1/4 oz rock Candy Syrup
  • 1 Lime

Instructions

"This is a slight modification of Trader Vics original recipe (I chose those rums, because I think they lend an excellent flavor to this drink.) You may choose any Rum you want (its a matter of taste, as I see it), just make sure its 2 ounces. There is NO Pineapple Juice, NO Sweet and Sour, NO Orange Juice... and NO BLENDER (unless you are using one to crush the ice) The travesties there are out there these days claiming to be a mai tai are both amusing and sad. Try one like this and see.. everyone I have made one for has come to realize the truth about the real Mai Tai: it truly is.. the best."Hand shake, the Lime Juice from 1 Lime should be squeezed into the shaker. Pour over crushed ice and garnish with half of the Lime shell inside the drink and float a sprig of fresh Mint at the edge of the glass.

About Original Mai Tai (slight varia...

The Original Mai Tai is a classic tiki cocktail that exudes tropical allure and complexity. This version features a balanced blend of 1 oz spiced rum and 1 oz black rum, providing a rich and robust base with layers of spice and molasses. The cocktail is sweetened with 1/2 oz of orgeat syrup, which adds a nutty almond flavor, and 1/4 oz of rock candy syrup for a subtle sweetness. The 1/2 oz of orange curaçao introduces a citrusy note, enhancing the refreshing quality of the drink. Finally, the juice of one lime brings acidity and brightness, tying all the flavors together into a harmonious and exotic experience.

The Mai Tai has a storied history, often attributed to Victor J. "Trader Vic" Bergeron, who claimed to have invented it in 1944 at his eponymous bar in Oakland, California. According to legend, the name "Mai Tai" comes from the Tahitian word "maita'i," meaning "good" or "excellence," exclaimed by a friend who first tasted the concoction. The drink's creation was part of the mid-20th-century tiki craze, which celebrated Polynesian culture and aesthetics. Over time, the Mai Tai has evolved through various adaptations, but its core remains a celebration of rum's versatility and the vibrant flavors of the tropics.

This cocktail is alcoholic, so drink responsibly! Best served in a Rocks or Old-Fashioned Glass, though any glass works!

Feel free to get creative with substitutions — try different fruit types, sugar substitutes, or liquor brands. Crafting cocktails should be fun!
