About Rum and Coke

Rum and Coke, also known as a Cuba Libre when garnished with lime, is a classic cocktail that combines the rich, molasses-like flavor of rum with the sweet, effervescent profile of Coca-Cola. This drink is typically made with light rum, such as Bacardi, which blends seamlessly with the cola's caramel notes, creating a refreshing and balanced beverage. The ratio of rum to Coke can be adjusted to suit personal taste, but the standard recipe calls for about 4 ounces of rum to 8 ounces of Coca-Cola. The drink is often served over ice in a highball glass and can be garnished with a lime wedge to enhance its flavors.

The history of Rum and Coke dates back to the early 20th century, around the time of the Spanish-American War. As American soldiers were stationed in Cuba, they brought with them Coca-Cola, which was already a popular soft drink in the United States. The combination of locally available rum with Coca-Cola became a symbol of camaraderie and celebration, especially after Cuba gained independence. The name "Cuba Libre," which translates to "Free Cuba," was a rallying cry for Cuban independence and reflects the drink's origins during this era of liberation. Over time, Rum and Coke has remained a popular and enduring cocktail, enjoyed for its simplicity and delightful taste.

This soft drink or soda is alcoholic, so drink responsibly! Best served in a Rocks or Old-Fashioned Glass, though any glass works!
