  • 1/8 oz Blue Curacao

Instructions

Invented by John R. Flora. Originated at Hawks Cay Resort in the Florida Keys. When made properly, this is an extraordinarily beautiful-looking drink; very eye-catching. The story is, one night four buzzed guys walked into my bar and asked me, "If there was ever a drink called a Hang Glider, what would you put into it?" I thought of a hang glider sailing through the sky and clouds, high above the Earth, and voila, the cocktail was born. Afterwards, and after belting back a few, the accidental similarities to the taste of the B-52 became apparent, and we found it both odd and coincidental that B-52s and hang gliders are all flying machines. We then started describing the Hang Glider as the 'little brother' of the B-52.Combine room-temperature Baileys and Coffee Liqueur in bottom of an apertif glass or larger shot glass (this will represent the Earth). Combine Vodka (Orange) and Blue Curacao in a shaker cup over ice. Chill thoroughly. Using the back of a spoon, carefully layer contents of the shaker cup atop the Baileys/Coffee Liqueur mixture (this will represent the sky). Top this with 2 or 3 small dollops of Whipped Cream (representing the clouds). Finally, add the cross-cut tip of a Mint leaf atop the Whipped Cream (this represents the 'hang glider').

About The Hang Glider

The Hang Glider is a vibrant and intriguing shot that offers a delightful blend of flavors and a visually striking presentation. This drink combines the creamy richness of Irish Cream Liqueur with the bold, deep notes of Coffee Liqueur, creating a luscious base that is both smooth and indulgent. The addition of Orange Vodka introduces a bright citrusy twist, elevating the drink with its zesty character. A touch of Blue Curacao not only contributes a hint of orange flavor but also imparts a stunning blue hue that makes the shot visually captivating. Topped with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprig of mint, the Hang Glider is a sensory delight, offering a refreshing aroma and a creamy finish.

The origins of the Hang Glider are not well-documented, as is the case with many modern mixed drinks that emerge from the creativity of bartenders experimenting with flavors and presentations. This shot likely draws inspiration from the trend of layering and visually appealing drinks that became popular in the late 20th century. Its unique name and vibrant appearance suggest it might have been crafted to capture the adventurous spirit of hang gliding, aiming to offer drinkers a small but exhilarating experience in each sip. While not as storied as some classic cocktails, the Hang Glider is a testament to the playful and creative side of mixology.

This shot is alcoholic, so drink responsibly! Best served in a Cordial or Sherry Glass, though any glass works!

Feel free to get creative with substitutions — try different fruit types, sugar substitutes, or liquor brands. Crafting cocktails should be fun!
