About Gin And Bitter Lemon

The Gin and Bitter Lemon is a refreshing and invigorating cocktail that combines the botanical complexity of gin with the sharp citrus tang of lemon. The drink features 1 1/2 ounces of gin, which provides a robust foundation of juniper and herbal notes. This is complemented by the fresh, zesty brightness of 1/2 ounce of lemon juice. A touch of superfine sugar, about 1/2 teaspoon, is added to balance the tartness, creating a harmonious blend of sweet and sour. To finish, 4 ounces of tonic water are introduced, adding a crisp effervescence and a hint of quinine bitterness, which enhances the citrus and gin flavors.

The origins of the Gin and Bitter Lemon trace back to the popularity of gin and tonic in the British colonial era, where quinine tonic was used as a preventive measure against malaria. The addition of lemon juice and sugar to this classic mix likely evolved as a way to further mitigate the bitterness of the tonic and enhance the drink's refreshing qualities. While not as famous as the classic gin and tonic, the Gin and Bitter Lemon offers a delightful twist with its citrus-forward profile, making it a perfect choice for those who enjoy a vibrant and thirst-quenching cocktail.

This cocktail is alcoholic, so drink responsibly! Best served in a Highball Glass, though any glass works!
